By now, you’ve probably heard of “WPA” – meaning “Win Probability Added.” Well, they track WPA and all sorts of stuff over at fangraphs.com. And, I was just looking at Alex Rodriguez’ season by season totals for WPA over there.
Here they are, with 2008 being through yesterday’s game:
Year Team WPA 1994 Mariners -0.74 1995 Mariners -0.36 1996 Mariners 3.79 1997 Mariners 1.97 1998 Mariners 4.51 1999 Mariners 1.19 2000 Mariners 5.27 2001 Rangers 5.23 2002 Rangers 3.75 2003 Rangers 4.15 2004 Yankees 3.08 2005 Yankees 5.52 2006 Yankees 1.09 2007 Yankees 6.85 2008 Yankees 0.69
There’s a chance that this season may be the first time in A-Rod’s career that he’s played a full season and had a WPA of less than “1.”
I’ll just hang up now and listen to your reaction to this…

its hard to judge something like this without any comps…

Carlos Quentin 4.08
Mark Teixeira 4.06
Pat Burrell 3.83
Hanley Ramirez 3.59
Justin Morneau 3.53
Josh Hamilton 3.51
Joe Mauer 3.49
Aramis Ramirez 3.24
David Wright 3.19
Grady Sizemore 3.04
Ryan Braun 2.92

Chipper Jones 2.72
Carlos Pena 2.71
Ryan Ludwick 2.63

Adam Dunn 2.22
J.J. Hardy 2.18
Brad Hawpe 2.11
Curtis Granderson 1.99
Kevin Youkilis 1.97
Mark DeRosa 1.96
Thats not exactly the best way to tell if a player has been clutch or not. But it does show that this hasnt been one of his better seasons.
big puma! Kinda sad to see Mark DeRosa comin in that much ahead of A-rod, I must say. How much do you figure that A-Rod lost due to being injured? You also have to figure in that was about the time of a season when A-Rod is at his hottest (early in the season)
