Isthmus Be My Lucky Day?
In April of 1999, I did something that I never would have done in the past. I went out to a local Sunglass Hut and bought (what was for me) a very expensive pair of sunglasses.
In the past, I was famous for losing or sitting on sunglasses. So, I never spent more than a few bucks on a pair – figuring that they would be ruined or misplaced shortly after I got them.
However, in April of 1999, I started working in New Jersey (as opposed to Manhattan – where I had worked since the summer of 1985). This meant that I would be driving to work everyday and no longer taking mass transit. So, my wife convinced me to go out and get a really good pair of sunglasses – as I would need them in the car. I ended up getting a pair of Serengeti glasses. I can’t remember actually what I paid for them – but it was around two hundred bucks.
Naturally, I babied these suckers. I treated them like they were made out of gold – because, to me, they were…considering what I paid for them.
And, as the years went by, I did a good job of making sure that they were kept pristine and out of harm’s way. Then, in March of 2006 – after nursing these puppies for seven years – I lost them. It was just about the time that I went to Sam Walker’s book party. I also had my car worked on around that time. So, I figured that either someone from the parking garage (that I used for Sam’s party in NYC) or the mechanic shop lifted them on me (out of the car). And, I was pissed about it – for a long time.
Now, just today, almost two and a half years later, I start ripping through the glove box in my car – looking for a tire gauge. In doing so, I noticed that there was a back-end of the compartment that was sorta-sunken and not easy to see unless you emptied out the whole thing – which I did today.
And, what did I find – way back there in the glove box? It was the eye-glass case with my legendary Serengeti sunglasses…the same ones that I gave up for dead back in March of 2006.
Wow. What a find. Life is funny. You never know what can happen at any given moment. Same as baseball. I guess that’s why I enjoy baseball so much…

Wait a minute, Steve, you can find your long lost, dead and buried sunglasses in the most unlikely of circumstances, connect this event to the uncertainty of life, but refuse to believe that the Yankees have at least a chance to reach the playoffs?
Aaah … you’re probably right. Just win again tomorrow, OK? ‘Preciate the help.
FWIW, I didn’t find the glasses with just 23 games left on “my” season. If I did, I probably wouldn’t have been too excited over it.
With 23 games in the season, you found your $200 sunglasses, and the Yankees found their $200 million *talent*…
