I agree that sports are covered differently but I don’t see how that coverage has anything to do with Kay/Sterling/Waldman’s personality/voice/idiosyncrasies.

-

I think the focus has shifted from relating the game on the field to the viewers to promoting individuals and generating viewership through (mostly artificial) controversy and sensationalism. The broadcasters that we get are a reflection of that philosophy. No modern producer would hire a Frank Messer who could describe what was happening on the field as unobtrusively as humanly possible when they can have a Michael Kay generating posts on blogs.

MJ, that's if they tie which looks unlikely lately. Toronto has won what 8 in a row, when was the last time the Yanks won 8 games in a row? July? It was one thing to be in second and make the playoffs, but Arod gave props to Halladay and Burnett and them not being in the playoffs. Being in 4th is very painful for Yankee fans there is no way to spin that, MJ. I also hate to say that 4th place is looking likely. We just have to get used to it.......

Listen to a broadcast, and it's clear why Sterling, Kay & Waldman have jobs. Company people through and through.

As for the shift in coverage, It's all about the shtick, IMO.

I’m not saying they’re good, but they’re not the worst. The faces that you see and the voices you hear take the blame, but there has been a fundamental shift in every aspect of how the game is covered and how sporting events are covered in general.
--------------------
Please elaborate on what you mean. I agree that sports are covered differently but I don't see how that coverage has anything to do with Kay/Sterling/Waldman's personality/voice/idiosyncrasies.

Look, it got dire when Toronto passed them.
-----------------------------
But 3rd place was a perfectly acceptable state of being.

It honestly showed that the Jays, Rays and Red Sox are better than the Yankees.
------------------------------
You're going to use standings to tell you who is better than whom? What if the Blue Jays and Yankees tie for third? What'll you base your decision on then?

Look, it got dire when Toronto passed them. It honestly showed that the Jays , Rays and Red Sox are better than the Yankees. I hate this 96-00 mentality of being patient and waiting out the pitcher to get to a weak closer. This is not 96 and things are different. The Red Sox have money starting pitching and a money closer. They also have kids who are trained properly to play the game right. They also have Bill James and the Yanks have golden underwear, ghosts and aging players. Toronto and the Rays(especially Tampa) are not as weak as they were back during the Dynasty era either.

Kay talks about about how this team is different, than the dynasty team. Guess what, the other teams are different, too. Wakefield is the only Red Sox player from 96, Rays didn't exist, and Toronto has all newbies. The Yanks have the aging veterans who have underperformed (with the exception of Mo) or have been injured from that "Golden Age". Cashman and Co have done a weak job updating this team .

Gotta understand, this is Michael Kay we’re talking about here… Understatement is not his forte.
------------------------
I've been saying for years: if the Yanks are the brand-name of baseball and they try to have the best of everything, how come they've settled with the worst TV and radio people out there? Michael Kay and John Sterling are atrocious.
