Alfredo Aceves, who was born in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico, makes his first big league start for the Yankees this evening. There have only been four other men, born in Mexico, to pitch for the Yankees. Via the Complete Baseball Encyclopedia, here are their stats:
Pitcher G GS IP W L RSAA Antonio Osuna 48 0 50.2 2 5 3 Juan Acevedo 25 0 25.2 0 3 -10 Alfonso Pulido 10 3 30.2 1 1 -1 Esteban Loaiza 10 6 42.1 1 2 -19
Needless to say, it won’t take much for Alfredo Aceves to be the pick of the litter here.
Also via the Complete Baseball Encyclopedia, here are the only players to ever bat for the Yankees, who were born in Mexico:
Player G PA OWP RCAA Ruben Amaro 191 543 .298 -21 Celerino Sanchez 105 336 .374 -8 Aurelio Rodriguez 79 237 .348 -8 Karim Garcia 54 166 .507 0 Carlos Rodriguez 15 39 .039 -5
I have to confess, I don’t remember Carlos Rodriguez from 1991 – at all. If I had to guess, I would say that he was called up when Alvaro Espinoza or Randy Velarde were banged up or something.

Switch hitting SS, IIRC. I remember he used to stand at bat like Kevin Maas, like he was sitting on a toilet.

You have a better memory than I do!

I didn’t recall him either. But looking up his career I was surprised to find he had spent 7 years in the Yankee organization. He must have been one of those “contigency players”—you know, a Plan B (or even Plan C) type of guy. Today we would know all about a Carlos Rodriguez, his MLEs, batting splits, range factor and so forth; but just 15 years ago, before the explosion of the internet, he could come and go without notice.

Shouldn’t Posada be mentioned here? I thought he was a Mexican born player.

Posada’s Puerto Rican.

Given the status of the team in 1991, they ran a lot of players through there. I remember guys like Mike Humphries (who made the team over Gerald Williams), Torey Lovullo, Jim Walewander, Scott Lusader (and his Sabo-esque glasses) among others…

What about an honorable mention for Wade Blasingame? He was born in New Mexico.

Based on the 1991 gamelogs, Carlos Rodriguez was up to spell Alvaro Espinoza for a little while because Alvaro was sporting an OBP around .290.

I remember all of those guys. Not fondly, mind you, but I remember them. I was in 10th grade and catching hell for rooting for the worst team in baseball. HS kids can be so mean!

And Espy had the audacity to complain and demand to be traded.
I think I was scrapbooking around that time, I hope I am able to find the article. Hell, I hope I am able to find the scrapbook…
