Nine, Eleven, & Seven Living on the Black: Two Pitchers, Two Teams, One Season to Remember
Sep 11

Via Baseball-Reference.com’s Play Index Game Finder, here are the 21 games (so far) this season where the Yankees pitchers have held the other team to 4 runs or less – and the Yankees still lost the game:

 NYM 2008 1 Ind. Games
 CIN 2008 1 Ind. Games
 BOS 2008 1 Ind. Games

Games found: 21.

If the Yankees had managed to win just seven of these games, then their overall record would be 84-62 at this moment – and New York would just be 4 games out of first place right now…and also just 1.5 games back of Boston in the Wildcard chase.

Could New York have won seven of these 21 games?  Well, I would like to think if you held the Reds, Pirates, Mariners and Royals to four runs or less this year, then you should have won that game.  So, that’s seven games right there where the Yankees muffed it.
