Why Not Us? Well, It Hasn’t Happened Yet
Lenny Dykstra via TheStreet.com offers “Dykstra: You Gotta Be Clutch.” Here’s what “Nails” had to say…
Winning is about making the right plays at the right time. As teams enter the stretch run leading to the playoffs, now is the time to come through in the clutch.
With my Nails on the Numbers newsletter, I’ve had a hot hand, and I’m just trying to build on my momentum and ride my system to profits.
I’ve written a lot about the race in the National League East between my two former teams, the Mets and the Phillies. That race is one I’ve been keeping an eye on as I’m sure the fans of New York and Philadelphia have been holding on for what may turn out to be one wild ride. That is certainly in the back of everyone’s minds after the Phils came from way behind last year to overtake the Mets and clinch the division on the last day of the season.
However, despite all the talk about the obvious contenders, one team has seemingly come back from the dead to take a run at the National League wild card. The Houston Astros have gotten hot at the right time. They have won 13 of their last 14 games to close in on the Milwaukee Brewers, who hold a four-game lead in the race.
You know…the Astros have won 13 of their last 14 games. During this span, their pitchers have an ERA of 2.34 and their batters have hit .285 – as a team.
The Yankees have 16 games left to this season. Just for the fun of it, wouldn’t it be something if they went on to win 15 of the 16 games? Hey, if the Astros can do it…
Nah, it will never happen. This Yankees team has had too many chances in the last 16 days to stand up and make a statement…and it’s never happened. Why should that change now?

“Why not us?”
Because we need 4 more Xavior Nady’s on the team and to purge these overpaid, useless assets that currently are clogging up the starting lineup for the Yankees.
Anyone notice that our AAA and AA teams are in the playoffs but the older, richer, hapless, punchless, hole-filled, injury ridden, lazy, error prone, double play loving, clutchless, lead blowing, predicable, arrogant, self confidence lacking, stat padding, bunch of under producing, so called “Major Leaguers” are struggling?
Give me Tino, Bernie, Chuck, Chilli, Paulie, Scott and a young Jeter and Posada everyday of the week.
And will someone run over Shilling with a Mack truck please?

I remember when someone from SNY and the FAN announced that the Astros got Randy Wolf and mockingly said ,”Why”? Now we know why. Their owner knows that they were a second half team and told GM ED Wade to make some moves. I hate to give Ol’ Drayton credit but he deserves some.
Bostowned, I pretty much agree with you BUT all the 96 Yankees couldn’t help this team for one fact I keep on pressing. The Rays are no longer bottom feeders but a dominant team. The Red Sox are now where the Yanks were back in the late 90s. The Jays seem to have the best pitching I’ve seen in years (that’s why they went on a 10 game win streak with such a horrid offense). In essence, the AL East has become much harder and the other teams made adjustments. That knock the starter out of the game is an old skool philosophy, when you face closers like K-Rod, Papelbon, etc so on.

You suggest the Yanks call up their AA and AAA kids? Please keep in mind that Kei Igawa, Shelley Duncan, Ian Kennedy and a whole bunch of other non-prospects make up those teams.
I know you were just trying to make a point but be careful what you wish for. The major league Yanks had a bad season but a total purge of this team is neither likely nor necessarily the best course of action.
