Yanks & Mets Deal With Rain, Fans, Differently
Both the New York Mets and New York Yankees had home games scheduled today.
The Mets game was to be the 10th to last game ever at Shea Stadium. And, the Yankees game was to be the 10th to last game ever at this Yankee Stadium. However, because of the rain, both games were called.
Here’s how the Mets are handling their situation, via MetsBlog -
Tonight’s game against the Braves has been postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled as the second game of a single-admission doubleheader tomorrow afternoon starting at 3:55 p.m.
According to a team press release…
Only tickets marked Game 73 for tomorrow’s game will be honored for the regularly scheduled 3:55 p.m. game and the second game to follow.
Upon the conclusion of the regularly scheduled 3:55 p.m. game, all fans at Shea are welcome to stay for the second game to follow. Tickets from tonight’s rainout will NOT be valid for admission tomorrow. Tickets from tonight’s game may be exchanged for a future Mets 2008 regular season home game, subject to availability.
And, here’s how the Yankees are handling their situation, via Peter Abraham:
Tonight’s game was called off. Here is the release from the Yankees:
Tonight’s game between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium has been postponed due to rain and rescheduled for tomorrow, September 13 at 7:05 p.m., as the second game of a day-night doubleheader. Tickets for Friday’s game will ONLY be honored for the 7:05 p.m. game on Saturday and will NOT be honored for Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. contest.
Fans are strongly encouraged to use their tickets for tomorrow night’s rescheduled game at 7:05 p.m. as there is no ability to exchange tickets for another game in 2008.
Those fans unable to use their tickets for the rescheduled contest tomorrow at 7:05 p.m., may instead exchange them for tickets to any home game at the new Yankee Stadium in the 2009 season, subject to availability and only after tickets are made available to the general public at a date to be determined in the future.
At the time tickets are available to be exchanged, fans may only do so in person at the new Yankee Stadium ticket office.
To me, the Yankees are doing the right thing here. This way, there’s still ten “gates” (for lack of a better word) or “windows” for a fan to get into the building for one last time. On the other hand, the Mets are now taking away one of those “gates” or “windows” by making tomorrow’s ticket a two-for-one deal.
Man, if I was a Mets fan with tickets to this evening’s game, I would be seeing red right about now…
Usually, I’m quick to get on a team for having day-night double-headers…because it smells of a way to get two gates on one day. But, in a case like this…where the parks are closing, etc., it’s the right thing to do. Good job, Yankees.

AWESOME! I have tickets to the mets game tom!
I’m sure there’s a reason for this; I believe there are other teams that are having twi-night doubleheaders (MIN @ BAL, DET @ CHI).
According to Kay in tonight’s broadcast, it’s Fox’s fault.
So, they couldn’t do a day-night DH on Sunday?
