Cashman, speaking in the Yankees’ clubhouse Friday night, seemed like a guy one step closer to the exit after Steinbrenner’s statement a day earlier that he wants the general manager to be head of an advisory group. Cashman, whose contract expires Oct. 31, had agreed to return in 2005 only if he were given sole decision-making power in the Yankees’ baseball hierarchy by George Steinbrenner.

    Did Cashman see the comments?

“Oh, I saw them,” he said.

    His reaction?

“I think the Steinbrenners should have a structure set up they feel comfortable with,” he said. “Without a doubt.”

Will he be part of that structure?

“At the end of the day, I definitely believe as owners, they need to set up a structure that they’re comfortable with,” he said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Again … does he want to return if that’s the structure?

“I’m certainly not going to make this about me,” he said. “I do have an advisory board. It’s my manager, it’s my coaching staff, it’s our pro scouting director, it’s our farm director, it’s our amateur scouting director. Those are the advisers that I utilize. But I fully support whatever the Steinbrenner family feels the proper structure needs to be. I think they need to set that up. They need to take care of that themselves, there’s no doubt about that.”

Hank Steinbrenner also said Thursday, “We’re going to have to look at what has been done wrong over the last five years, which I’ve had one year to try and figure out. Clearly, a lot of mistakes were made.”

Asked if he agrees with that assessment, Cashman said: “I’m not going to comment on it.”

I’m starting to think, more and more, that the Yankees will give Cashman a contract offer to stay…but it’s going to be like the one they gave to Joe Torre after last season. It will be interesting to see if Brian sees that as a slap in the face, like Joe did…

It might make sense for Cashman to start playing around with LinkedIn to see if he can make a connection with Theodore Lerner, the owner of the Washington Nationals. That might come in handy in about seven or eight weeks from now…

lol something tells me Cashman won’t need LinkedIn to find a job if he’s looking. This is all a big game, he’ll be back.

Hankboy is full of hot air. He’s not in charge of this team.

I think Cashman will leave because no one is in charge. The Yankees are now controlled by 2 brothers who know even less than their father did and don’t agree on the team’s direction.
