Yanks Magic Number Really 47?
If reports that I have seen are true, Brian Cashman has 47 days left on his current contract as G.M. of the Yankees.
Thinking about this, I wonder what day is the magic number where Cashman needs to let the Yankees know if he’s coming back? Of course, that’s contingent on when the Yankees make him an offer. Related, at what stage do the Yankees need to start making a list of replacements for Cashman – assuming they want him back but he doesn’t want to come back?
Does none of this happen until 47 days from now? Do the Yankees wait that long to make an offer? Assuming the Yankees make an offer soon, does Cashman make them wait until October 31st for an answer? And, do the Yankees wait until October 31st has come and passed until they start to think about life without Cashman?
I’ve read that MLB’s G.M. meetings are very early this year – meaning just a few days after the 2008 World Series. If Cashman and the Yankees dance this through to October 31st, and then Brian bolts, who would represent the Yankees at these meetings…Hank? Oh, that’s a thought.
Further, the next Winter Meetings, where some deals are made, will be held in the first week of December (in Las Vegas). That’s less than 6 weeks after Cashman’s Yankee deal expires. If Cashman walks away from New York, is that enough time for the Yankees to come up with a replacement? Maybe they should start thinking about a “Plan B” sooner…like around “now”?
What do you think?

When the season is over, the Yankee front office goes full time into making plans for the off-season. The number one item before any decision on trades and free agents is the status of the GM. You can rest assured that they will immediately make a decision on whether they want Brian back and with what structure around him. They will make an offer and you can also bet that Cashman will make a decision with some speed and not leave them hanging until the end.
Unless you think that should the Yankees make an offer just good enough to be rejected, a la Torre, then Brian will want to leave them hanging as long as possible, out of spite, to make the transition that much harder.
Both team and GM have an interest in moving forward or going their separate ways with all due speed.
