  • Yanks Yet To Renew With Trenton

The Yankees have yet to renew their Player Development Contract (PDC) with the Trenton Thunder. This seems odd to me.

Only two teams in the Eastern League have not had their post-2008 PDCs nailed down yet – the Connecticut Defenders (with the San Francisco Giants) and the Trenton Thunder (with the Yankees).

The way this works now: Today, the window closes where the list of teams that are available is provided to clubs which have not renewed their affiliation. Starting tomorrow, through month end, teams can negotiate for new affiliates.

Are the Yankees looking to move from Trenton to Connecticut? That seems strange – considering that’s where they were, from 1995 through 2002, when the team was known as the Norwich Navigators. Plus, it seems like the Yankees and Thunder have enjoyed being affiliated with each other the last six years. But, then, why have the Yankees not yet renewed their PDC with Trenton when everyone else in the Eastern League is done (sans Connecticut)?

I could see why the Giants would want to leave Connecticut. And, there are four teams in the Southern League (also Double-A) that have not renewed their PDC. So, maybe the Giants are thinking of moving closer to home there?

But, it makes no sense for the Yankees to go to the Southern League – Carolina, Chattanooga, Huntsville, or Jacksonville (who are up for grabs) offer them nothing over Trenton.

Like I said…it just seems odd that the Yankees have yet to renew Trenton…seems like it should be a slam dunk for them, no?

Couldn’t agree more. It seems idiotic for the Yanks to give up Trenton for a more-distant locale.
