About an hour ago, I heard Peter Gammons being interviewed on ESPN Radio (1050 AM in NYC) regarding the Brewers firing of manager Ned Yost with just 12 games left to their post-season run this month. Gammons said that it was a knee-jerk reaction of Brewers owner Mark Attanasio – and, that it would not shock him (meaning Peter) if Attanasio let his G.M., Doug Melvin, go (as well) at the end of the season if his team does not make the post-season.

Gammons then suggested that Melvin would be a great fit for the Yankees G.M. spot – should Brian Cashman not return to his job after this season.

    Gotta say…it’s an interesting idea.

Doug Melvin came up through the Yankees system – and was their Scouting Director in 1985. After that, from 1987 through 1994, he was with the Baltimore Orioles – mostly as their assistant G.M.

He left the O’s to join the Texas Rangers – and he was their G.M. until 2001. After a year with the Red Sox, as a consultant, he became the Brewers G.M. in late 2002 – and he’s been there ever since.

If the Yankees had to replace Cashman after this year, they could do a lot worse than Doug Melvin – assuming that the latter was available.

I want a sabermetrician and I was impressed with his trading record when he was GM in LA.

DePo got a raw deal by Frank McCourt out in LA and was fired WAY too early in his tenure. But I really don’t believe the Steinbrenners or the idiotic New York press would ever let someone like DePo get hired here.

DePo was pretty terrible with LA and couldn’t handle the press there.

What makes u think a bookworm could handle NY?

LA has its share of overrated prospects too. So I wouldnt give him credit for the youth movement there. That’s more Whites job.

DePodesta is an egghead personified. Supposedly, he is happy in SD keeping a relatively low profile. He made some strange moves with the Dodgers. I don’t like him as GM in that his buddy is JP Ricciardi and look at what happened in Toronto! They were both schooled by Beane in Oakland, but at least JP has a scouting record. If you think that Cash the Man is bad. Just wait and see what happens with Paul D.

Gammons made a good suggestion with Melvin in that he is a known quantity. Somebody has to come here, because Cash the Man’s tenure has to be over.

I’d like to know too. The big one was getting Brad Penny from the Marlins for LoDuca, Mota and Encarnacion. He got Milton Bradley and flipped him for Andre Ethier.

on the FA side, he b(r)ought Jeff Kent, JD Drew & Derek Lowe…
