Baumbach: Monahan’s Memories
Jim Baumbach has a great feature running today on Gene Monahan’s Yankee Stadium memories. Here’s a couple of snips:
“This place is more than my office, and it’s more than my home,” Monahan said. He’s worked for the Yankees since 1965, and he’s been the head trainer of their major-league club since 1973. That means he worked one year at the original Yankee Stadium, two years at Shea and all 33 seasons that have been played here.
One item Monahan insists will make it across the street is the antique scale in the trainer’s room, which he believes dates to the 1940s or 1950s. “It’s weighed in thousands of Yankees,” he said, from Joe DiMaggio to Mickey Mantle, from Bernie Williams to Alex Rodriguez, and he’ll see that it will weigh in thousands more.

Pete Sheehy had 59 seasons with the big league Yankees. Monahan has 36 years now. But, Gene does have 44 in the organization. Very impressive. Sheehy has a plaque at the Stadium. Monahan should have one too.
