During the broadcast they showed the guy, presumably "Steve" holding the ball through the netting. Personally, if I had that ball, and security told me to drop it while I'm trying to retrieve it and some other guy picked it up and tried to claim it as his own, there'd be a pretty good chance that there would be a fight on his hands.
