The absence of any mention of longtime manager Joe Torre, winner of four World Series titles with the Yankees; and of former pitcher Roger Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner; caught the attention of many fans watching Sunday’s Yankee Stadium finale.
Yankees media relations director Jason Zillo, on behalf of the organization, attempted to squash those thoughts: “A lot of great Yankees weren’t mentioned [Sunday],” Zillo said. “There was absolutely no slight intended, and perhaps, looking back, they should have been mentioned.”
A person familiar with the Yankees’ planning said there was some concern Clemens would be booed.
As for Torre, that same person said Sunday was devoted to the players and former players, and that more attention would be paid to other personnel at the stadium’s closing ceremony Nov. 9.
…A lot of great Yankees weren’t mentioned…
Name one Jason. Wow. What a weak excuse.

Agree completely. A very flimsy excuse.

Huggins & Steinbrenner? Did Jim Bouton make it?
One other thing that I thought to be cool, was Bob Sheppard’s remarks. I wish his health was better so he would’ve been able to attend. Steinbrenner as well.
Having said that, I agree it was a pretty weak excuse.

Jim Bouton was a great Yankee?

The excuse for Clemens is ridiculous. No one, under those circumstances, was going to boo, and the reaction would have been so positive that had a few people started booing, no one would have heard it.
And its really obvious to me that they simply didn’t want Torre acknowledged. If you’re going to mention Huggins and Stengel you have to mention Torre.

The Yankees didn’t do anything special about the managers, just the position players. If they did, then I would really call foul. The managers that were mentioned were either players before (Dent, Martin) or part of the 1923 team (Huggins). I don’t recall anything really special made about Stengel.
However, I just have to say, the catcher portion was a bit laughable: Dickey… Howard… Berra… Munson… GIRARDI?!?!… Posada. Kinda silly really.
