However, DD also has fine jobs in MON and FLA also on his resume.
---------
Expos (ERA+, Team finish in division)
87: 107, 3rd
88: 116, 3rd
89: 102, 4th
90: 108, 3rd
91: 100, 7th

Marlins (ERA+, Team finish in division)
93: 103, 7th
***3 division format***
94: 96, 5th
95: 99, 4th
96: 104, 3rd
97: 106, 2nd
98: 77, 5th
99: 89, 5th
00: 96, 3rd
01: 98, 4th

Yep, an excellent resume... Never had a division title, teams only qualified for the playoffs once in the 14 seasons he was a GM. One Series winner in 14 seasons.

Also, it appears many of those pitching staffs were around league average.

Kinda makes you wonder how he ever managed to get and keep a job? ;)

Dombrowski took a team that had lost 119 games in one year..and had them in the World Series three years later.
===========
About those Tigers...

04: 72
05: 71
06: 95
07: 88
08: 74

Looks to me that 06 was a spike, an outlier, maybe. You would think that DD would be able to maintain the success of 06?

Has Brian Cashman ever done anything close to that?

I believe ownership is more important than the general manager. In this case, this ownership has yet to learn the consequences of sequential losing seasons, ie empty seats. The team probably will not get to the post season again for several years. There will be empty seats. As it is, the team did not become #1 in AL attendance until 2003 (dating from 1990). It took many consecutive post season appearances before those seats were sold. It wasn't because they were the Yankees. Hank talks a lot, but all reports say he has almost nothing to do with decisions. Hal is the guy, though Hank is about to come into his own again with focus on Tampa--he's big as long as he's parked down there, but don't ask him to get on a plane.

And, how about Soriano for A-Rod and cash?? I don't care if it was a salary dump. The Red Sox had a deal in place for A-Rod, couldn't get Union approval and couldn't re-work it. Cashman then swoops in, completely under the radar, and gets A-Rod and cash by giving up only one quality player.

It's said that every team (and its fans) over-hypes their prospects. I wonder if there's a corollary: that a team and its fans often under-hype their stars. That's relevant in evaluating Cashman. We focus on Ed Yarnall, when there's plenty of positive evidence staring us in the face.

How about the Mike Mussina FA signing? (Or was it Felix Lopez who was behind that one?) How about Robinson Cano and Chien-Ming Wang in the amateur draft? How about getting Westbrook AND Lilly for Hideki Irabu? How about getting Clemens for Wells, Lloyd and Homer Bush?

Pavano had many teams interested in and bidding on him, including the Red Sox and the Tigers (who reportedly offered him more money).

There are organizational issues with talent evaluation, and the Yankees are not the best talent evaluators in baseball. Maybe that's the crime.
