Baumbach & Rieber’s Final Score Brewers To Yanks: “More Money Please”
Oct 03

Bob Klapisch writes that the Yanks and Mets are poised for a CC Sabathia bidding war.

Something tells me that CC’s agent just went from six to twelve hearing this news…

As usual, the Mets will get what we dont want. So the only way they get him is if we back out…Kinda like with Beltran and Santana.

I can’t recall where I read it but just this week there was a column in one of the tabs about how important Torre was a recruiter of free agents, particularly in the case of Mussina, the writer asked what kind of recruiter Girardi would be with a guy like C.C. when he can promise him a clubhouse where sweets are banned and a boot camp spring training regimen.

An innings eater like Lowe plus a healthy Wang and Joba will fix the Yankees pitching woes. Burnett will be Pavano II and Sabathia isn’t coming.

i agree in the sense that if you can get two solid, proven veteran arms for the price of one Sabathia, as intriguing he is as a front rotation guy, you might be better off with the depth.

you could go Wang, Joba, Pettitte for 3 of the 5.

sign Lowe at 4 years/$50 million?

sign Burnett at 5 years/$65 million?

thats approx $110 million, when it’ll probably take at least $120 to secure Sabathia, minimum.

then have Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, and company (Horne, Wright, etc) as your 6,7,8, etc, guys either in the bullpen or down in Scranton ready to go.

Oh, to be sure I think that Sabathia is the right answer, I just think that between his preference for the NL, west coast, and (presumably) the occasional ice cream sandwich ( ;) ) he won’t come to NY.

Kurkjian had a great point to rebut Steve’s belief about Sabathia as a money pitcher: the guy pitched the entire month of September knowing he had to win to get his team to the playoffs. Those games were just as pressure-packed as October and ought to count on his resume, too.

Who’d he beat? The Cubs with a bunch of Triple-A guys in the line-up? Hey, you don’t get to face line-ups like that in the post-season.

    ?

The Cubs had their starters in the lineup.

As I read this I thought it was going to say: “… you don’t get to face line-ups like that in the American League.” And that includes the regular season.

Firstly, there is no way that Omar is gonna spend another 23 mill a year on another pitcher after Johann…NO WAY! Also that scuttlebutt about CC, CC will go where the money is and that is in the Bronx. That NL West crap is for hype. Is Moreno gonna give CC 23 mill a year? Mc Court (who is the poorest owner, the Boston Southie who could only afford Manny for free)? Sabean can’t add to payroll. Maybe Moreno, but Arte won’t give homegrown wunderkind K-Rod his big payday so why would he give CC his?

Once I Was, the whole AJ mess is definitely PavanoPart Deux. The Yankee brass should realize several things. AJ is best buds with Roy Halladay and his pitching mentor Brad Arnsberg from the Marlins has been his pitching coach at Toronto , too. His comfort level is very high, in that Gibbons(in spite of him attacking Lilly and Hillenbrand) and Cito are player’s managers and got along with AJ. When he comes to NY, he will not be able to eat a candy bar and be under the scrutiny of Girardi. Burnett is perfect for Toronto and a terrible pick for the Yankees.Burnett can be a dickhead, not on the level of Schill the Shrill but he’s up there.
Lowe is better and even Garland BUT not Burnett.

The story is that Arte can’t justify having a closer being paid more than Mo.

After back to back years with bullpen issues, I don’t think Omar will have the same qualms.
