Nah, you weren’t unreasonable, nor losing your mind.

It was more of a miscommunication than anything else. I can see both sides of the story, and can understand why the counter girl may not have said anything about a special.

Personally, as you were making a stink, I would’ve given you the large pizza. Especially if there were other customers in the store waiting.

Or taken the small pie and cut it into 8 slices

My only comment is that your family eats like a bunch of birds — a small pie for 4 people?!!!

One other thing, it’s not the cashier’s call “to make it right.” That gets escalated to a manager; she can get fired for doing something like that.

Yeah, I would have left, too. Especially if he was laughing at me. What’s up with that?

It’s not an upsell thing, but I’m not going to say whether they should have mentioned it or not. But, once you asked for them to make it right, they should have. It makes sense that a customer would ask that and it’s not worth whatever it costs them to save the two slices. I would have just given you the special.

The credo the industry lives by.

Whenever I order a pizza, the first thing I always ask is “do you have any specials?” Pizza around here is ridiculously expensive unless you get it in a special.

Upsold in the sense that you’re getting a larger pie. Whomever was working figured a small pie was what you wanted, which is why you ordered it. Like I said, I’ve seen too many customers get agitated at CSR’s (myself included on both sides of the transaction), to understand why nothing was mentioned about the $9 pie, especially if the special has existed for a while (having said that, I’m assuming it’s a Monday Night Football related special).

Something else that should be taken into consideration is the number of people who try to hustle a restaurant out of free food. I know that wasn’t the case here, but it has happened.

I would talk to the owner, see what he says about it. At the very least, it gives him a heads up about what goes on when he’s not around.

The 6 slice pizza is odd to me as well, but I’ve seen it done before. Usually, pies are cut into 8 slices regardless of size.

Raf – Re: “it’s not often that customers complain about the special” – I would bet that few complain because it’s probably rare for people to buy the small pie.

FWIW, I sometimes get a look when we’re in pizzerias and order it. But, hey, my kids can barely finish one slice each and there’s no reason for my wife or I to eat more than two slices of pizza at a meal. So, given my status, why would I buy a large pie when the cheaper one fits us?

However, in this case, because the larger pie was cheaper than the smaller pie, it was stupid not to get the larger pie, for less money, and then just freeze the extra slices…or, like I said, just toss them…because it was less for the large than the small…

…of course, this all was tied to them telling me that the larger was cheaper…which they never did.

And, had they told me about the special, it would have not been a “upsold” thing – because they would have been saving me money by telling me about it…
