This evening, watching Game 1 of the 2008 NLCS, I find myself thinking about Pat Burrell.
Personally, I’ve never been much of a Pat Burrell fan. While I cannot point to one specific thing and say “That’s it!” – he just comes across as being a bit of a jerk…at least to me.
Still, over the last four seasons, you could make a case that Burrell is one of the “Top 15″ right-handed batters in the big leagues. He’s far from the elite class…guys like Albert Pujols and Manny Ramirez. But, he’s just as good a hitter as guys like Aramis Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis.
Burrell is a Free Agent this off-season – and, reportedly, the San Francisco Giants are very interested. Yet, I wonder, would the Yankees consider Pat Burrell to be their next first baseman and make a run at him when he’s available? Burrell played first in college and in the minors. So, it’s not like it would be totally new position to him.
I’m not saying this is a move that I would recommend. But, I would hope that it’s something that the Yankees are, at the least, evaluating…meaning that they’re considering all options for all needs on their team.
What are you thoughts towards Pat Burrell? If the Yankees could get him, would you want him?

Ya know what? I’d rather throw 3-4 years at him then 8-10 at Tex.

Teixeira’s better than Burrell and, if I’m not mistaken, younger too. The days of looking at a player (Posada, Sheffield, Damon, Matsui, Betemit) and picturing him at 1B out of necessity have to end. For pity’s sake, why can’t the Yanks just accept that they’ve needed a first baseman since the late 90’s?

“For pity’s sake, why can’t the Yanks just accept that they’ve needed a first baseman since the late 90’s?”
agreed.
and they cant be afraid of this stigma the rest of the league is going to whine about… about how they’re buying championships, blah blah blah.
i dont want a transplant. i dont want someone who used to play there that prob can still do so. i dont want someone playing 1B learning on the fly.
i want a 1B. Texieira fits perfectly. is he going to cost money? yeah, but you know what? who cares? i dont.
and just because you sign a big name FA doesnt mean you are automatically giving up on the plan to build the farm system and promote from within, etc. if anything, this helps the long term plan.

When Giambi was first signed to his long term deal what did you think?

“When Giambi was first signed to his long term deal what did you think?”
thought it was a good deal.

Same here. Even his last season exceeded my expectations. When he signed, I thought his last couple of years would be quite painful to watch. Like Bernie Williams 2005 painful.

“When he signed, I thought his last couple of years would be quite painful to watch.”
right. as you go into the long term agreement with the understanding that you’re signing the player for years 5, 6, 7 of the contract knowing you’re going to get great production in years 1-2-3-4.
plus, Teixeira is actually a much more dynamic player than Giambi in the sense that he’s all star caliber on both sides of the field, offensively and defensively.
and IMHO, you have a much better chance of Teixeira living up to the production level expectations that come with a 7 year deal than Sabathia with a 6 or 7 year deal. time could prove me wrong, though. thats the risk you take with signing any free agent player to big money.

Well, Adam Dunn is the same type of player, only better, and will probably be cheaper. Why not him instead of Burrell?

IMO Tex will probably be a Yankee — don’t be shocked if they take #23 out of retirement as an incentive, lol

Mehmattski, Dunn is the real Arod ! Why do I call him that.Because he never hits home runs when they really matter. And he is Dave Kingman Jr becaus ehe strikes out so much. Pete, Teix makes a lot of sense, good call. Burrell is more of a gamer than Abreu is and that is what the Yanks need. He wants 15 mill a year which is a problem because the Yanks have other pressing needs tooalong with offense.

Career OBP
Kong: .302
Dunn: .381
Hmmm, career OPS+
Kong: 115
Dunn: 130
I’d be willing to take my chances with Dunn.
Career OBP/SLG
AD: .381/.518
PB: .367/.485
And Dunn is younger.

Raf, one glaring ommission but what else is new? What is Adam Dumb’s (sic) batting average? This is how Dumb is scouted: he doesn’t have the passion for the game, strikes out too much, hits home runs when they don’t count in a band box! The Yanks need another DH type who will come on board for a big paycheck, right? WRONG! The Yanks need yet another DH clogging up the base paths, they already have what 3 of them next season? Dumb is gutless and is showing up for the paycheck, the Yanks need gamers not real Arods/Kingman Jrs ! Bill James calls him an old school type of baseball player and he means that in a derogatory manner. Ricciardi said what most of baseball says and thinks about Dumb: he doesn’t even care about the game.
