“Hopefully” Brian? Mets 49, Yankees 40 [Or Thereabouts]
Oct 10
PLAYER ERA	BR/9 IP	H/9 IP	BB/9 IP	SO/9 IP
Pitcher A 2.90	12.29	6.87	5.05 8.27
Pitcher B 2.86	12.27	6.95	5.32	10.64

The above stat lines are for two pitchers from this past season. Yankees fans like to get on the case of both of them. Could these stats, of the two pitchers, be any closer?

Actually, one of these two pitchers is in action this evening. Yes, “Pitcher A” is Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Boston Red Sox. Any guess on who “Pitcher B” is?

It’s a bit tricky – because the stats shown here for “Pitcher B” were generated while he was pitching in the A.L. this year (and before he was traded to the N.L., in-season, where he remained until the end of 2008).

O.K., rather than drag this out…

“Pitcher B,” above, is Arthur Rhodes – and those (above) are his stats this season from when he was pitching for the Seattle Mariners.

Baseball stats are fun, huh?

    Interesting.

What’s also telling is that it seems that Rhodes has settled into some sort of LOOG-Y role, given his usage.

Really not interesting when you consider that one is over around 20 innings and the other over nearly 170. Is anyone going to argue that they are similarly accomplished?

FWIW, even though there’s a difference in IP, do the stats not say something towards each pitcher’s ability to throw strikes and the quality of their stuff, when they do throw strikes?
