The Red Sox lost Game 2 of the 2008 ALCS to the Rays last night, er, I mean, this morning – in 11 innings.
Did you know that there have only been four situations where a team lost two games of 11 innings or more in the same post-season series? Here’s the list:
The Orioles lost Game 3 (11.3 innings) and Game 6 (11 innings) of the 1997 ALCS to the Indians.
The Astros lost Game 5 (11.3 innings) and Game 6 (16 innings) of the 1986 NLCS to the Mets.
The Twins lost Game 2 (11.6 innings) and Game 4 (11 innings) of the 2004 ALDS to the Yankees.
And, of course, the Yankees lost Game 4 (11 innings) and Game 5 (13.6 innings) of the 2004 ALCS to the Red Sox. (Yeah, between the ALDS and the ALCS, the Yankees played four post-season games in 2004 of 11 innings or more. The only other team to play four games in a total post-season, of 11 innings or more, were the 2003 Marlins.)
Since the Yankees have done this on both the winning and losing side, it only seems fair that Boston, who did it on the winning side (in 2004), now gets to square off their ledger here, right?
Whadda say Rays? Can you do it to Boston again?
