After 2,130 days (or thereabouts) of Iron-Horse-like service, my PC crashed yersterday.  The estimated time of death was 12:30 pm EST (give or take) on October 14th.

This left me with 2 choices:

    1.  Fix the problem via a dump-restore procedure that would probably take a few days; or,

    2.  For an extra $660, buy a new PC and give the old one a decent burial.

Since the old one was just about 6-years old, I opted for the latter.  And, after being disconnected from the on-line world for a day, I’m now back.

Boy, going from XP to Vista has been interesting…so far.

Shortly, I’ll be catching up on everything that I’ve missed in the last day or so…

    Stay tuned…

Hopefully, you gave it away to a family member… Otherwise, I may be interested.

FWIW, we’re thinking about wiping it, reinstalling XP, and then giving it to the kids to bang on…

and FWIW, I assumed you started your new job with the lack of posts and had already slipped into my winter-long baseball-less depression

      Miss Me?

Yes, for the reason Corey mentioned, and because, gosh golly, I love ya. :)

I figured with the news of Bobby Meacham’s firing, you’d have posted something. When you didn’t, I assumed you were out of “Summer of Steve” and earning a paycheck.

PS – How’s Vista? I’ve heard such horrible things that I’m almost afraid to ask.

Some people love it, some hate it. It takes some getting used to, but I haven’t had a problem with it.

Having said that, I use Ubuntu & XP @ home.

      What happened?

Yesterday, around lunch time, I was looking up some stuff on the Pension Protection Act and IRC 409a and my PC locked up. So, I had to kill the power to shut it down.

And, when I tried to fire it up again, something was wrong.

It would load XP, but, no matter what user I selected, it would hang at “loading personal preferences.”

After two annoying phone calls to India, to get Dell support, I decided to take it to a local guy – and he confirmed what Dell said – - that XP was damaged, I was screwed, and that we would have to have a tech dump the data, and then try to reinstall XP…basically trying to reset to zero.

After thinking it over, I decided “Hey, it’s 6 years old, on its last legs, so, why sink any money into it when you don’t know what might happen next…”

How’s Vista? (BTW, we switched from Dell to HP, FWIW.)

So far, OK – kinda cool, because it’s a new way to use the PC, etc.

Problems? None so far…sans the fact that Fios is not up to speed with Vista yet…so, while my internet connection is OK, all the supporting stuff that Fios provides is now useless, etc.

BTW, FWIW, the Summer of Steve ends on Sunday.
Although I will be working on some of that book stuff for the next four days or so too.

And, thanks MJ – nice to know somebody missed me!

Forget the Meacham firing, your first post ought to be about the fact that A-Rod’s “soulmate” will soon be unattached.

Then you can consider what the former “titans” of the AL East need to do to compete with the new one.

this is incorrect. You don’t need to dump your data, and it amazes me that people are getting paid money to give you false information. If you have your windows XP disc, you can simply repair the installation without losing *ANY* of your data. Hell you don’t even need to have the cd key (or the right cd key) to do it. If you want some help, please feel free to pick my brain :)
