Sorry Butchie but citing the Baseball Tonight crew doesn't exactly impress.

But let's try it another way. Given the trajectory of the ball and the fact that the runner was well past him, were the odds better that he makes the play, or that it goes foul?

Anyone who says "he had to make that play" would be first to say, if he let it go and it stayed fair "well, it was a really tough play - he probably doesn't get him at the plate so he took the chance that it was going foul. Either way the Phils win."

But, to start a game at 9:45 PM EST is insane.

Not when there is this much $$ involved :)

Once I Was, the cast and crew of Baseball Tonight backed up my argument. From an armchair general's point of view , you can afford to parse every move in the comfort of your own home (from your DVR and their replay). Longoria literally had to make a split second decision and this was a game on the line play or even worse game over play.Once again, Longoria HAS to make that play that way period. If he doesn't do squat he becomes a goat if the ball is in play.Kruk basically said what I had said,: he would have been ripped if it was fair and he let it go and he had to make that play.

Antone is correct. There was no play, his only chance was to let it go and hope.

Steve, you know that the game is going to be scheduled for 8:30 for maximum TV ratings and revenue. The choice was to play the game Saturday or lose the travel day, and you can bet that the players prefer to have a break than end up playing five straight games.

It looked like it was going foul to me...I don't think he had a play on him anyway..so why not let it go? I think he thought he could make the play when he really had no shot.

Once I Was, hindsight is 20-20. Like I had said can you imagine if it stayed fair? He had no choice, he was too close to the plate to look back and wait and see if the winning run went home. A player that far ahead of third can't let it go behind him and then hope and pray that it goes foul. This is a world Series game with the winning run coming in, not a tie or some regular season game in May! Longoria IS a special player and he tried on that one.

OnceIWasAYankeeFan - actually, that's my point. If you have to wait an hour and a half to start a game that was supposed to start at 8:15 (or thereabouts) because of rain, then, call the game.

If the delay had happened in-game, that's one thing. I can understand that. But, to start a game at 9:45 PM EST is insane.

Antone, it would have went foul... but guess what? LOngoria had to make that play no matter what, he was too close to home to try and see if it went foul. Can you imagine if it didn't go foul how he would be savaged? Longoria has to make that play no matter what.

Once I Was, it's OK to blame Brain Cash Man for everything As long as he presides over this mess called the Yankees, he can be blamed for the fall of Western Civilization, for all I care!

Steve, Moyer did a great job didn't he? Garza had to go and talk smack and look at what happened!!! If you look at Garza vs Moyer, the matchup favors Garza but that's what I love about baseball......the game is played on the field not on paper. Lester never lost two games in a row and look at what happened. Garza was a gunslinger when he faced a pitcher that is basically twice his age.

Lastly, the umpires need new glasses! The officiating in this World Series has been terrible.
