The Yankees have been very aggressive in calling teams to see who might be available. They called the Astros about Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman and were told they were not going to be dealt .

Hey, why stop there? Why not call the Phillies and ask them for Chase Utley and Cole Hamels? Or, how about calling the Indians and asking for Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore?

If you’re going to waste time, set the bar high…

Yes, how dare they check a player’s avaliability. Cashman wasted three whole seconds!!!!

“Cashman’s Text: Oswalt or Berkman avaliable?
      Houston’s Text: LOL OMG No”

      Blasphomy!!!

Seriously – we know you aren’t a big Cashman fan, but you’re better than this.

I’m happy Cashman is performing his due diligence. He’d be remiss if he didn’t call these teams.

Also, as an aside, earlier this week on Metsblog it was reported that the Brewers are contemplating moving Fielder…

Come on, a waste of time? Cashman acquired David Justice the same way in 2000 and it wound up changing our season and helping the Yanks win another World Series. You call GMs and see who may be available and sometimes it works. Get off Cashman’s ass.

I’d rather hear news of a worthless time-wasting inquiry than hear news that Cashman ISN’T calling other GMs for the availability players.

We’re talking about a GM here who would not trade Hughes, Kennedy and Melky for JOHAN SANTANA.

So, what would he be WILLING to give up for Berkman and Oswalt?

      That’s why it’s a waste.

You don’t go into a Lexus dealer unless you’re willing to spend, a lot, would you?

      Lance Berkman 1b-of
      6 years/$85M (2005-2010), plus $15M 2011 club option

      Roy Oswalt rhp
      5 years/$73M (2007-11), plus $16M 2012 club option

      As opposed to

      Johan Santana lhp
      6 years/$137.5M (2008-13), plus 2014 club option

      It isn’t a waste. It’s due diligence.

And if tomorrow the Astros traded Oswalt to the Red Sox, and it was found out that the Yankees didn’t even discuss a trade, what would you be saying?

    9. November 2nd, 2008 | 8:31 pm

I’d say the Astros were pretty stupid not to pull the Yankees into the bidding to ensure, between Boston and New York, they got the best deal possible by playing the two teams off each other…

Steve, get over the Johan Santana trade. First of all, we don’t know what the TRUE offer was for Santana. It could have been more players or different players so don;t make it about melky/hughes etc. Second, the Twins didn’t want him in the AL so we would have had to give up top prospects and a giant sum of money for one pitcher when an equally talented pitcher, CC, would be available the next year for just money. I’m happy we didn;t trade for him and we’ll see how Hughes and Kenneddy develope. Chances are, in 3 years, they will be a better package of talent than just Santana when he’s in his mid 30s

What in God’s name are you basing this assertion on? Chances are they’ll both be pumping gas by 2010.

haha this post is hysterical. since a gm didn’t make one trade for a big name player, checking in on other potential available big name players is a waste of time.
