Another Hughes Injury?

Phil Hughes is scheduled to start in the Arizona Fall League tonight. He missed his last turn in the rotation because of a torn fingernail.
Com’on, be honest. If Carl Pavano missed a start for a torn fingernail, well, the joke store would be all out of material on him.
So, how’s Hughes med-chart looking these days?
2004: Stubbed/broken toe and elbow soreness.
2005: Shoulder tendonitis and a “tired arm.”
2007: Severe hamstring pull and ankle sprain.
2008: Fractured rib and a torn fingernail.
That’s alotta stuff for a guy who just turned twenty-two, no?

Perhaps the pressure on his finger nail from his new cutter has caught up? In all fairness, he hasn’t been throwing the pitch for that long, and Wang has shown that these injuries don’t hold you out that long. (and his fall off constantly)

Perhaps, but I doubt it.
I don’t know how long he keeps his nails, but when I pitched, my nails used to split when I grew them too long (which wasn’t all that long, come to think of it).
I had grown them when I tried messing around with a knuckleball. That phase last all that long, I went back to my sinker/slider/split combo.
wow you called it!!!
kudos to Steve

Yeah, I’d stay away from schleprock over there…
“That phase *DIDN’T* last all that long…”
Josh Beckett used to get blisters all the time. This isn’t a very big deal.
I’ve been watching Yankees games since 1973. They’ve played close to 5,800 games since then – and I cannot recall a Yankees pitcher missing a start due to a torn fingernail before…
…not even Carl Pavano.
Dog bite? Yes. (Cone.)
A busted french-tip? Nah. Until now…
hughes’ injury history is definitely a concern, but this is nothing. wang deals with this on the regular, and it forced him out of one game early (in 06 or 07). this happens to pitchers who throw sinkers/two seamers/cutters by putting increased pressure on one of their fingers. so like corey said, this very well could be the result of the cut-fastball, just as wang struggles with it due to his sinker. i’m not making excuses for the kid, just stating something that could be a distinct and common possibility. either way, this is not a big deal.
he is pitching a gem tonight
