hughes’ injury history is definitely a concern, but this is nothing. wang deals with this on the regular, and it forced him out of one game early (in 06 or 07). this happens to pitchers who throw sinkers/two seamers/cutters by putting increased pressure on one of their fingers. so like corey said, this very well could be the result of the cut-fastball, just as wang struggles with it due to his sinker. i’m not making excuses for the kid, just stating something that could be a distinct and common possibility. either way, this is not a big deal.

I’ve been watching Yankees games since 1973. They’ve played close to 5,800 games since then – and I cannot recall a Yankees pitcher missing a start due to a torn fingernail before…

Perhaps, but I doubt it.

I don’t know how long he keeps his nails, but when I pitched, my nails used to split when I grew them too long (which wasn’t all that long, come to think of it).

I had grown them when I tried messing around with a knuckleball. That phase last all that long, I went back to my sinker/slider/split combo.
