Via an ACE Performance Grooming Tools interview with Phil Hughes -

ACE: Do you have any superstitions about grooming during season?

Phil Hughes: I don’t shave on the day I’m scheduled to pitch. When my face is freshly shaven, it itches when I sweat, so I will usually do it the day before a start.

ACE: What is your most embarrassing grooming moment?

Phil Hughes: When I was in the minors, I was planning giving myself a haircut with an electric razor, but had to go to a team meeting before I got started. I came back afterwards and forgot that I didn’t have the guard on, so I accidentally buzzed a big strip of hair off the side of my head. I had to buzz the whole head afterwards to even it out.

ACE: What hair style have you had in the past that you regret the most and why?

Phil Hughes: Probably the comb-over I had when I was a kid. I sported that look from age 5 to about 10!

ACE: What’s your favorite ACE tool? Why?

Phil Hughes: I really like the clippers because of the size – you can really grip them.

ACE: Do real men get manicures?

    Phil Hughes: YES!

Back in February 2004, I heard Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio running through a ‘Are you a Metrosexual?’ quiz. The questions ran as follows:

Do you live in an urban area?
Do you pride yourself on going to the best boutiques and shops?
Do you use a stylist or barber?
How often do you work out at the gym?
    Has anyone called you gay?
Has anyone ever called you materialistic?
Have you plucked or waxed your eyebrows?
Have you ever received a manicure?
    Pedicure?
Do you think you face is a canvas, and a razor a paintbrush?
Do you think modeling is fake?
Do you regularly read GQ or Esquire?
Do you like Banana Republic clothing?
When you order speciality coffee, does the clerk give a mean face because
    it’s so complicated?
When you go out, do you often check out what other guys are wearing?
Do you sometimes get jealous when another guy has a nice outfit on?
What do you think of David Beckham?
Do you use more than 3 skin care products?
Can your shampoo be bought off a supermarket shelf?
Have you ever shaved your legs?
    How about your chest?
    Arms?
Have you ever waxed your body hair, or used Nair products?
    Do you moisturize daily?
Do you believe today’s straight man is really the gay man of the 80s?
Do you watch Sex and the City?
Have you ever worn any sort of make-up or cosmetic cover?
Has a gay guy ever hit on you?
    Did you like it?
Do you love the movie American Psycho?
    Do you hate manual labor?
Have you ever tried Yoga or meditation?
Are you in touch with your feminine side?
    Do you like to dance?
Have you ever worn nail polish?
Do you have a man bag?
Do you own many pairs of boxer briefs?
Can you leave the house without putting gel in your hair?
    Do you drink Evian water?

Maybe they should add “Do you really throw 91 MPH even though so many claim that you throw 95 MPH?” to the list?

I’m not sure that last one qualifies as being ‘metrosexual.’ It definately qualifies as another unwarranted cheap shot at Phil Hughes!

dude, he obviously did it for the money use some common sense man. If a guy paid you $100k or whatever it is or anything for that matter to say simply yes after that question, you’re telling me you’d say no? That’s just crazy talk.

Maybe Hughes is that long-rumored “Yankee bisexual”.

Anyway, Hughes is a pitcher, he probably benefits from manicures. Matter of fact, I’ve never seen a pitcher with horrible-looking nails.

Although I know you don’t mean anything bad here and you’re just having some fun, given your past history with Hughes, this probably wasn’t the wisest choice of postings.
