No more Posada/Sheffield/Damon/Matsui to 1B
----------
Posada & Sheffield had mitigating circumstances; Posada played a little bit 1b when he came up & Sheffield played 1b to get his bat in the lineup, with the acquisition of Abreu. I presume Matsui & Damon were or will be attempted to move to 1b to minimize injury risk.

These players weren't acquired with the intention of having them play 1b.

How about moving Cano to CF?
--------------------
I'm typically resistant to converting X to Y. Has Cano ever played OF? I don't believe you can go from 2B to CF in just one off-season. Furthermore, given the likelihood of Nady and Damon being out there, is Cano's arm even average for a CF?

For a team with all the money and resources, the Yanks need to start focusing on having players play their natural positions. No more Posada/Sheffield/Damon/Matsui to 1B; no more Cano to CF.

I will be very surprised if Gardner is the starting CF next year.
----------------
If the Yanks are dead-set against bringing Abreu back, then there's no way they can trot out an OF of Damon in LF, Melky/Gardner in CF, and Nady in RF. That's a weaker OF than the Mets have been putting out there the past few seasons and it's totally unconscionable.

Either they have to find a CF that's much, much better than Melky or Gardner, or they just pay Abreu more for two years than he'd accept for three years and have a Nady-Damon-Abreu OF from left to right.

There is no place on this team for Melky/Gardner beyond the 4th or 5th OF spot.
