Yes, I know there’s five months until Opening Day. Nonetheless, I thought it would be fun to take a look at what the Yankees Opening Day roster would be – if the season were to open tomorrow – and then look back at this, and update it, as the Yankees make player moves, etc., between now and their actual Opening Day in 2009.
To that end, if you asked me, at this moment in time, this is the Yankees 2009 Opening Day roster (based on the players they have under contract now):
Jorge Posada
Juan Miranda
Robinson Cano
Alex Rodriguez
Derek Jeter
Hideki Matsui
Johnny Damon
Brett Gardner
Xavier Nady
Jose Molina
Melky Cabrera
Wilson Betemit
Chris Malec
Chien-Ming Wang
Joba Chamberlain
Darrell Rasner
Phil Hughes
Alfredo Aceves
Mariano Rivera
Brian Bruney
Jose Veras
Edwar Ramirez
Phil Coke
David Robertson
Mark Melancon
