[Joe] Torre said he had been invited by the Yankees to a Saturday event at which Bronx high schoolers and a few members of the ‘98 team will transfer dirt from the home plate area at the old Yankee Stadium to the new Yankee Stadium. He’s not going to make it due to a scheduling conflict with a brunch for his foundation, but it seemed like an olive branch of sorts.
Is it just me, or, is this “ceremony” the least publicized event in Yankee Stadium history? The Daily News mentioned it last week (at the end of a column). Pete Abe and Kat (above) have mentioned it in blogs. But, that’s about it. I can’t find anything about it on Yankees.com.
Why so low-key about it? Very strange…for the Yankees…no?

Maybe the cash-strapped Yanks don’t want to pay for security?
I find this odd as well, but I guess if they want to avoid the rush and crush of people, I guess I can understand why they wouldn’t publicize it.

Yeah, first they were having a closing ceremony in November with all sorts of celebrities and former players. Then they realized it would be anti-climactic, given the big send off in September, so they cancelled it. Now this dirt thing. Not very “Yankees-ish.”

FWIW, here’s some pictures of the move:
