  • Which Moose For The Hall?

Let’s say that Mike Mussina does retire now. And, let’s say, someday, he gets into the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown.

Which baseball cap should be on Moose’s plaque? Think about it.

As a member of the Baltimore Orioles, here are Mussina’s numbers:
    288 Games, 2,009.6 IP, 147 Wins, 81 Losses, 230 RSAA

And, as a member of the New York Yankees, here are Mussina’s numbers:
    249 Games, 1,553 IP, 123 Wins, 72 Losses, 96 RSAA

You could make a pretty strong case that, if Mike Mussina makes the Hall, he should go in as an Oriole, no?

He also ‘established’ himself as an Oriole. While on the Yankees, he generally just tried to keep his previous reputation afloat.

Correct. Love the Moose, but he’s an O.

If Mussina goes he goes with the O’s. Don’t forget he was Baltimore’s 1st Round pick in June 1990, was given a slot in their starting rotation 14 months later, was named to the A.L. All Star team five times as a Bird, and spent 10 years with the organization all told. That more than qualifies him as a “distinguished alumnus” for the Orioles, imho.

This is one of these Winfield type calls, so the player’s input tips the scales. Winfield wanted to go in as a Padre (may have received some money from the Padres), Jackson went in as a Yankee (clearly he should have gone in as an A).

To some extent this is all academic, Mike is borderline at best so this decision is probably 15 years away at the earliest.
