Beane turned a #4 starter (Smith), a demoted closer that no one wanted last year (Street) and Carlos Gonzalez into Matt Holliday. What's so perplexing about this from Beane's standpoint?

He turned 2 nothings and Gonzalez into a something and there's a good chance that he can meet or beat this package in July if the A's decide to push Holliday off to another team.

yeah, agreed... to the masses here it seems like Beane has something else up his sleeve.

I think this time I take Beane at face value here... Holliday will start the season in Oakland and then either finish the season there if the A's are still in it, or perhaps get traded at the deadline if they are not.

but yeah, i cant help but have the feeling that Holliday gets spun somewhere else come spring training.

They don't need him for one year, at high cost in prospects and no guarantee of a long-term deal. Since he's been connected with the Sox for a long time, I'm ecstatic he's going elsewhere for the same reasons. I just can't comprehend why the Beane would make a deal like this. Bringing in what's surely a rental, at the cost of whatever prospects ... what's the point? Does Beane think they'll be competitive next year with Holliday and maybe Giambi? This really flips Beane's M.O. on its head, since he usually develops young talent and then flips them for more before they become free agents.

I have to admit, I'm a little bummed Holliday was traded so quickly here... i figured the Yankees might have had an outside shot at the slugger.
