Hughes Has Big Day In AFL Excalibur (1981)

Via Buster Olney -

As expected Friday, the New York Yankees officially tendered an offer to free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia.

The offer is expected to be six years in length and have a total value of slightly more that the record $137.5 million deal that pitcher Johan Santana signed with the Mets before last season.

That’s about $6 million more a season than I would have offered as a starting point. But, I guess the Yankees mean business on this one. I hope they don’t go too much higher than this offer. Anything else is just throwing money away. I cannot see too many other teams matching $140 million for six years, do you?

And if he signs for less, you can’t say it was about the $$…

I don’t see other teams matching that, but a lower offer might sign him if it’s from the NL or west coast. It depends on how much money means to CC compared to playing at home and swinging the bat.

I think the Yanks want to know FAST, one way or the other, if they get CC. This deal effects a lot of their other stategies. If CC turns down this initial offer, either:
    1) He REALLY doesn’t want to be a Yankee
    2) He thinks he can squeeze another $5-$10 from us. This is risky business.

Basically, if they do NOT get CC, I think they go hard at Tex, and get 2 of AJ/Lowe/et al.

I’d like that, except I’d want “et al” instead of Lowe.:)

So now the question is just how long until he signs.
