2009 Opening Day Roster, As It Stands Now [Update]
Some changes over the last 8 days to the Yankees projected 2009 Opening Day roster (based on the players they have under contract now):
Jorge Posada
Juan Miranda Nick Swisher
Robinson Cano
Alex Rodriguez
Derek Jeter
Hideki Matsui
Johnny Damon
Brett Gardner
Xavier Nady
Jose Molina
Melky Cabrera
Wilson Betemit Ramiro Pena
Chris Malec
Chien-Ming Wang
Joba Chamberlain
Darrell Rasner Ian Kennedy
Phil Hughes
Alfredo Aceves
Mariano Rivera
Brian Bruney
Jose Veras
Edwar Ramirez
Phil Coke
David Robertson
Mark Melancon Damaso Marte
Looks like the Yankees could use some help in the back-up infielders department, no?

Steve,
You left LHP Damaso Marte off your projected ‘09 roster.

Forgot to include this in my last comment – wouldn’t you say Dan Giese gets the nod as the last man in the pen at least for the first few months of the ‘09 season until Melancon gets more minor league innings under his belt?
The only minor league infielder currently in the system that I believe has a chance to make the team in Spring Training is Chris Malec.
Also to note, Justin Christian has apparently been playing second base again.
Mark Loretta could be a good option.
If they want to look at recent minor league free agents I would look at bringing back Bernie Castro and Cody Ransom, as well as look at Brian Myrow and Calix Crabbe.
Looking at the 40 man roster this iswhat I came up with:
C Posada
1B Swisher
2B Cano
SS Jeter
3B A Rod
LF Damon
CF Gardner
RF Nady
DH Matsui
Molina
Melky
Christian
Ransom
SP Wang
SP Joba
SP Hughes
SP Kennedy
SP Aceves
CL Rivera
Marte
Bruney
Veras
Ramirez
Robertson
Coke
when/why did miranda get taken off the 40? Also the fact that we posted an mlb player and that japanese paid 1 mil for rasner makes me never want to get another japanese pitcher (if they think that highly of rasner)
Rich M, FWIW, I believe that Ransom is not under contract for 2009 yet.
sergio51 – thanks! I missed Marte and will add him now.

I think Loretta wants like 4 million or so. I read the Dbacks were looking into him and he was to expensive for them.
I wouldn’t give Loretta 4 million to sit on the bench.
Might as well resign Ransom or I think that guy from Minnesota is available, Nick Punto.
Ransom is perfect for the Yankees as a utility infielder. Plays good defense at a number of positions, hustles and swings a good stick. Plus he’s cheap. What’s not to like?
