i think relying on swisher is a mistake. Yes, i do happen to like the trade as they got something (not much IMO) for nothing, but if this is the bat that is going to replace abreu, we are not in for a good summer. If Abreu can be had for 1 year, then yes sign him, if not we need to sign Tex or trade for a big bat. This lineup that was posted does not look that formidible. If you put Posada back to his career lines, do you really think that’s adequate protection for A-Rod? I don’t…

They also only have 2 starters right now and one of them hasn’t pitched a full season in the majors (Joba)…I think they go after the pitching first.

Yank Crank, this is a point I have been making quite recently on this board: Brain Cash Man is making a big mistake on his pitching obsession BECAUSE they need offense. In my eyes if Teix and another hitter are not added , this will be another lost season. At this point, they should keep Abreu simply because he is a reliable producer, even though he is up there in age.

MJ, I agree having Abreu in the lineup would make it look better. But at 35 with his avg. and bb regressing, he wants a 3-year deal. Is it worth giving him that deal just so he can help the lineup this year? With A-jax in the wings and Holliday a younger free agent next year, isn’t it worth it to see if Nady can produce in a contract year and take the draft picks away from the team that signs Abreu?

Agree with MJ, but I also think or at least am hoping they are going to make another move that would either upgrade CF or sign a Teixeira to push Swisher into LF and Damon into CF.

The change I’d make is not casting Abreu out into the cold. The lineup you present is hideous, given Matsui’s and Posada’s questionable status at this point due to injury. I don’t get why the Yanks would rather Nady and the CF replacement level over Abreu in RF, Nady in LF and Damon in the middle. Damon isn’t a great defensive CF anymore but I can’t imagine that his negative defensive impact would still be better than all those outs that’ll come from having sub-par production in CF and RF.

Obviously, the Yankee focus is pitching. I’m glad that’s their focus, but to steer away from it…the Swisher trade eliminates Abreu and Giambi from our lineup. If the Yanks had to play a game today this would be their lineup (roughly):

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Matsui DH
A-Rod 3B
Posada C
Nady
Swisher 1B
Cano 2B
Gardner/Melky CF
