      hahaha, it’s so true. in the eyes of Yankee fans A-Rod can never do enough. everyone talks about how he won’t be loved until he wins a ring but…is that really the case? i think it has less to do with no ring than it does his initial struggles in the 2004 alcs (games 4-7) and the 2005 alds against anaheim. something tells me he will never truly be appreciated.

      It’s why Yankee fans suck. We’re sitting here watching a great player go out and bust his ass every day, never take plays off, and somehow we keep on finding ways to hate on him. It’s depressing how many Yankee fans think like that Boorstein piece.

      It’s silly too because a guy like Giambi, who most fans should have much more of a reason to hate, is respected WAY more by that group of fans. If A-Rod was less awkward and better in front of the camera, he’d be a lot better off.

      Being crazy rich doesn’t help his cause either, but people will always be jealous of money.

      It’s funny. I’ve talked to many Yankees fans who share this opinion: “Yeah, A-Rod is a great offensive player. But, he makes it real hard to like the guy.”

      Now, I agree – 1,000,000% – that A-Rod does two things that you have to LOVE in a player: He comes prepared to play everyday and he never dogs it on the field. He’s the anti-Manny in that respect.

      So, here’s the question: What is it about A-Rod that makes some many people not like him – or that it makes it hard for them to like him? It’s not the numbers. It’s not that he’s a Pavano. It’s not that he doesn’t hustle. Yet, it’s a reality that so many feel this way about him. So, it has to be something, right?

      Is it the Clydesdale jog? Is it the curl the bottom lip and stick out your chin thing? Is it the gum-spit-slap thing? Is it all the off-field stuff? Something else?

      If it were just a handfule of people who felt this way about him – meaning being hard to like – you could write it off to sample size, etc. But, there’s A LOT of people who feel this way. So, why?

      Ah, more highlights in the hair than on the field? ;-)

      I think his personality rubs people the wrong way. That and he makes a lot of money.

      ARod just rubs ppl the wrong way.. its not money alone.. Jeter makes a ton of money too.. i think Arod is synonymous with choking no matter what the numbers say and a lack of loyalty be it with the rangers or the opting out from the Yanks.. i still maintain we could have had him for lesser than 10/275 Mill.. who really wud have offered him 10 yrs r 200 Mill…

      Also, until he produces that game winning RBI in the postseason.. until he does a mini big-papi he is what he is.. an overpaid regular season machine… this maybe unfair.. but he also seems aloof at times.. even in a huddle.. he seems uninvolved.. he has every right to extract all the money someone is willing to pay him.. but it certainly didnt help to have incentive clauses to break records or win MVPs.. other players have it too.. but i dont think they win it or cash those incentives as often as ARod does and the constant mention abt how much he makes by every national announcer and ESPN-Sox fanboys cant help either… but there are 2 images that most wont forget .. the sucker punch to his face by J Varitek and the old lady slap at Arroyo’s hand in Game 6 04 ALCS… he came out a lot feminine from those 2 events.. his pink lips just highlight it more…

      ===============
      Here’s what I think the real reason is, even if the “haters” don’t even realize it.

      Remember back in the late 1990s when Nomar, Jeter, and A-Rod were all playing SS and the media and fans used to debate who was the best? Well it’s because of that. When arguing who was the best, a Yankee fan would obviously choose Jeter. He’s a Yankee, and he’s won four rings. What had A-Rod done? Nothing except put up meaningless number and bolt the team that drafted him for money…so much money that the team he signed with couldn’t sign the pitching they needed to compete. It’s a no-brainer. How could you even compare the two?

      So Yankee fans are predisposed to root against A-Rod, and every time he doesn’t perform, that predisposition is reinforced. “I was right about this guy. He’s no Jeter. He’s a choker. All he cares about is money.” Whatever the situation calls for.

      I don’t feel that way, but I think that’s what at the root of it. It’s too bad too, I think if A-Rod wasn’t so socially awkward, or he wasn’t so overtly aware of how good he is, he’d win a lot of people over. I think he really does care about winning, and really does love being a Yankee. The problem is that he’s been working from behind since day one.

      Frosted lips and frosted hair and Clydesdale jog (absolutely love that) aside, he was cheered in ’07 when he hit HR #500 and practically carried the team on his back. It’s the choking thing that turns everybody off. People wouldn’t hate him if he produced with RISP. I think he’ll have a monster year in ’09. It’s an odd-numbered year, so it’s a given.

      It goes back to the Texas contract. A man gets a quarter of a billion dollars to play baseball. He’s been wearing a target on his back ever since.
