Phil Coke is a late bloomer who received an ample late season pen audition with the Yankees. While Coke was a starter in the minors, he’s a candidate to be a member of New York’s bullpen in 2009 – as a left-handed specialist and/or middle innings long-man. Held the 52 big league batters that he faced to an OPS of .392.
Then again, 2008 was the first time that Coke, who is 25, pitched above A-Ball. And, you have to wonder if he’s a true late bloomer or if this past season was just a fluke.

I was encouraged by Baseball America’s take that he is a legit 8TH inning guy. Looks like they got lucky by converting him to a reliever. If he starts in 09, it’s a bad sign.

out of curiosity what stalled him? Bad performances? Injury?

Zzzzzz. Haven’t I seen this movie before, and wasn’t it called “Sean Henn”? Prediction: Coke will be saying “Can I check your oil?” a lot in 2010.

Late bloomer yes, fluke no. I have known Phillip coke for a long time, he has always worked towards something and achieved his goals. To come from a small town like Sonora and make it to the “Big’s” is one thing, and I know that Phil will never let go of that and to prove to all of you who doubt him that he is the real deal. And to my friend Phil your the man everyone here in town is proud of you keep it up buddie and sit them down ^_^
