-As long as the idea isn’t to replace Cano with Orlando Hudson for more than two years (with an option for a third year) AND we get Matt Kemp, then I’m ok with that. Toss Kemp in the OF mix and now we’re talking. He’s not a particularly good defensive OF but he’s young, athletic, a good hitter, and definitely a nice young building block.

That’s from MLB Trade Rumors via Jason Stark….I agree with you on the Sox not going after Furcal because of Renteria and Lugo. Plus Lowrie is decent and they could always sign another Alex Cora type for backup.

Antone, what’s your source on that quote?

I can’t imagine why the Red Sox would get in on Furcal after spending tens of millions on Renteria (failure) and Lugo (failure) and having Jed Lowrie ready to go for very little money.

Four teams are in on Furcal: the Giants, A’s, Braves, and a mystery team. Stark talked to execs who guessed the Red Sox or Orioles could be the fourth team. That team apparently has to make a trade to open up their shortstop position.

Maybe the White Sox are the mystery team, but they have SS open (at least in my mind), so no trade would be needed to sign Furcal.

I think Furcal is a possibility because they didn’t pick up Orlando Cabrera’s option and Juan Uribe/Wilson Betemit don’t really cut it as everyday players. The White Sox haven’t had much of a leadoff presense and Furcal could be the guy they’re going for. Good call on that Antone.

Thanks for the info MJ. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself who they are trying to go after. If they can’t move Konerko or Thome then it can’t be Teixeira. I wouldn’t think they would jump in on Sabathia. Maybe Furcal or someone like that? All the big name position players on the market are 1B and corner OF. I can’t see them going after Manny, but maybe they would. That wouldn’t jive with the getting younger theory though.
