Something’s Calling…
This one takes me way back. Circa 1980, I used to hang out at a place called the Rock Palace (on Van Pelt Avenue on Staten Island). It was somewhat of a dive. (What else would you expect from a place called the Rock Palace on Van Pelt Avenue on Staten Island? But, hey, we were somewhat under-age and able to get in. So, going there made sense at the time.)
It’s now called the Romance Bar Restaurant. (Man, I can only wonder what that’s all about.)
Back in the day, there was a cover band, called Condor, who played at the Rock Palace on a regular basis. And, one of the tunes that they did, and did well, was this one.
We used to leave the bar/seating area and stand right on top of the stage, towards the left, when the band would play. There was a huge Marshall Stack there. And, you could actually catch a breeze off the amps while the band cranked.
There I was, bottle of Bud in one hand, with a slight head bob going, feeling the breeze off the Marshall Stack, trying to look as cool as someone in their late-teens could look, just digging Condor’s cover of this Clash classic.
Did that more than a few times. Probably partly explains why my hearing today is not so good. Also probably explains why I have some fond memories of care-free youth every time I hear this one…still…to this day…
