One up, with no fiscal conditions?

Anyone saying no is sort of ridiculous.

Here’s my question: why would I want to weaken the team by trading away the best player on it?

If you’re going to concoct mythical trades, why not trade Derek Jeter for Hanley Ramirez or Jorge Posada for Joe Mauer? At least those would get the team younger AND better, not just younger.

I should point out by saying that I realize how tremendous a hitter Hanley Ramirez is. My point isn’t to intimate that A-Rod is absolutely better than Hanley, merely to point out that these mythical trade proposals are part of the larger “I hate A-Rod” agenda this blog seems to adhere to. If you really want to improve the team with half-baked trade ideas, see if you can get us a shortstop that can field his position and hit a little too…

Can I interest you in a little Julio Lugo?

HAHAHA, no, I’ll pass :D . As long as we’re dealing in fantasy-land, I’ll stick with my Jeter-for-Hanley trade. At least the offense gets better (even if the fielding doesn’t).

~~Here’s my question: why would I want to weaken the team by trading away the best player on it?~~

To get a player who is better? ;-)

That’s the point of this series of “Would you trade A-Rod for…?” polls this month. Many, like MJ, are quick to say that A-Rod is the best player in baseball. But, is he? In the last poll, it was a landslide – many would trade Alex to the Cardinals for that Albert fellow…..

So, if A-Rod was the best player in baseball, why would you make that trade? It’s obvious – because many feel that Albert is better than Alex. So, therefore, A-Rod cannot be the best player in the game – according to many.

Based on that, I wanted to take it further…and see how many other “multi-skilled” players out there would people rather have than Alex. And, in the end, if there are 6 or 7 (or more?) players out there that many would rather have over Alex, then it puts this “he’s the best player in the game” defense to bed.

I said he may be the best player in the game. I didn’t say he absolutely was.

And, frankly, given the dislike of the player, your surveys aren’t quite scientific either.

Nope, just that some of your readers feel that way.

So, by this logic, the Rangers traded for Soriano because they thought he was the best player in the game? :)

I wouldn’t trade A-Rod for Hanley Ramirez. But I would trade Derek Jeter for Ramirez in the proverbial New York Minute.

i’d say A-Rod is the best aside from Pujols…

    13. December 9th, 2008 | 4:11 pm

      Here’s my answer:

I’d trade A-Rod for Hanley straight up as long as the Marlins are assuming the contract because you would be trading a 32-year-old third baseman for a 25-year-old short stop who should be one of the best players in the game for a good seven years. You’re gaining premier offense at a tough position, payroll flexibility and youth. I love A-Rod, but in a Utopian world, that’s an easy trade.

i think we are excluding the idea of contracts…as if this is in a vaccuum. Who do you want to sign for a 1 year $0 deal A-rod or hanley

      ================================

The problem is, you’re asking one question to get an answer to another. Anybody who has any sense at all would trade A-Rod for Hanley Ramirez because A-Rod is older absurdly expensive and Hanley is young and really cheap.

If you want to know who people think the better player is, though, you should ask, um, “Who’s the better player?” In which case, I’ll bet you’re poll results would look a lot different.

And, just for the sake of saying so, I think that once you get to the level of A-Rod or H-Ram or A-Pu (you heard it here first), the difference is pretty much negligible, anyway. They’re all great.
