To get a player who is better?

That’s the point of this series of “Would you trade A-Rod for…?” polls this month.

The problem is, you’re asking one question to get an answer to another. Anybody who has any sense at all would trade A-Rod for Hanley Ramirez because A-Rod is older absurdly expensive and Hanley is young and really cheap.

If you want to know who people think the better player is, though, you should ask, um, “Who’s the better player?” In which case, I’ll bet you’re poll results would look a lot different.

And, just for the sake of saying so, I think that once you get to the level of A-Rod or H-Ram or A-Pu (you heard it here first), the difference is pretty much negligible, anyway. They’re all great.

i think we are excluding the idea of contracts…as if this is in a vaccuum. Who do you want to sign for a 1 year $0 deal A-rod or hanley

Here’s my answer:

I’d trade A-Rod for Hanley straight up as long as the Marlins are assuming the contract because you would be trading a 32-year-old third baseman for a 25-year-old short stop who should be one of the best players in the game for a good seven years. You’re gaining premier offense at a tough position, payroll flexibility and youth. I love A-Rod, but in a Utopian world, that’s an easy trade.

I wouldn’t trade A-Rod for Hanley Ramirez. But I would trade Derek Jeter for Ramirez in the proverbial New York Minute.

So, if A-Rod was the best player in baseball, why would you make that trade? It’s obvious – because many feel that Albert is better than Alex.

So, by this logic, the Rangers traded for Soriano because they thought he was the best player in the game?

And, in the end, if there are 6 or 7 (or more?) players out there that many would rather have over Alex, then it puts this “he’s the best player in the game” defense to bed.
