The Hardball Times Baseball Annual 2009 Patsy Cashman Walkin’ After Burnett?
Dec 09

So says Marc Topkin

[Rays] Executive VP Andrew Friedman called it “a very good meeting” and said [Jason] Giambi has “got a lot of the characteristics of a hitter that we like.” He also said he spoke on the phone with a third potential addition, whom he would not name, but also said he still thinks it’s “pretty early in the process.”

The Rays apparently moved quickly in the next stage of their information gathering process on candidate to improve their offense, with word around the Bellagio that they met late Monday night with Jason Giambi. They are also scheduled to meet sometime in the next 24 hours with Bobby Abreu’s agent, Peter Greenberg.

Somehow, if the Rays sign Abreu, I don’t think they’ll be trading him for Kevin Stocker…again…this time.

And, the “Big G” in Tampa? Oh, the girls in Mons Venus probably have dollar-signs in their eyes already…

    As for Giambi

“Some team is going to get a steal in Jason Giambi”

  2. MJ Says:

It drives me absolutely batty to think that two productive contributors for the Yanks would both be unceremoniously dumped and potentially end up on a division rival while the Yanks replace them with the far less talented Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher.

I like Cashman but this is pretty ridiculous.

  3. Raf Says:

Especially in the context that the offense failed the Yanks in 2008. But yeah, I’m sure the Rays would rather have Giambi @ DH than, say, Cliff Floyd

MJ, I agree with you on all counts. It’s funny how the Yankees are making terrible adjustments this off season. Yes, they need pitching BUT they were so deficient offensively that they need to add good clutch hitters pronto not soft assholes like Burnett! One more thing: no Adam Dumb please. JP Ricciardi is an idiot BUT said the truth about him. He couldn’t buy a clutch hit even if it was for free…….

Giambi would make a good fit for the Rays or Jays, he is a good clubhouse guy and is still productive. Abreu would come at a steeper price so I don’t see him going for a lesser rate. Abreu could probably get more money from a wealthier club so I don’t see him in the Rays sights.
