   Man, what is Mark Shapiro thinking?

   Depending on the dollar amount, I would think Shapiro’s thinking that Pavano can’t be much worse than what he showed in NY.

   Having said that, given some of the arms left on the market, I’m surprised he went with Pavano. Maybe he wanted to bookend his oft-injured closer with an oft-injured starter?

   Pavano’s ERA+ since 2005 is 85. That’s Steve Trachsel and Jaret Wright territory. Heck, if you’re going to sign him, you might as well sign Jeff Weaver and Livan Hernandez too.

   It’s a base $1.5 with incentives, so it’s not a lot of money (relatively speaking). I still don’t know why Shapiro picked Pavano over someone like, say, Paul Byrd.

   The right-hander agreed to a one-year, $1.5-million deal with Cleveland that includes $5.3 million in incentives for games started and innings pitched, a source close to the negotiations told The Denver Post.

   So, the Indians are willing to pay Carl Pavano close to $7 mill and the Yankees don’t want to pay more than $10 to Andy Pettitte. Go figure.

   No, that’s silly. We don’t know anything about the incentive clauses in Pavano’s contract. All we know is that the Indians were willing to pay Pavano $1.5 million. For all we know, he might have to throw like Johan Santana to earn the full $5.3 million in incentives. If the Yankees signed you to a $1 contract for 2009 with a potential $30 million bonus if you threw 300 innings with an ERA under 2.00, would we say that the Yankees are willing to pay Steve Lombardi $30 million? No. And the chances of Pavano having a full, healthy season next year are fairly similar.

    Because Pavano is gonna pitch on an incentive basis , it is a win-win for both parties. If Pavano gets injured (more than likely), he gets what he gets. But now that he actually has an incentive to pitch in a low pressure situation and is playing for his next contract,,,,,well Pavano and his buddy Burnit know a lot about pitching well in walk years! I still find it hard to believe that Shapiro didn’t go for an even dirt cheaper base BUT pitching is still a commodity even in this down market.

    Paul Byrd? Good meat and potatoes pitcher , but he might get what 6-8 mill guaranteed if there is interest in him. Then again the market is down this year, so who knows BUT pitching is still a valuable commodity this year no doubt.

    Pavano’s ledger in 2008 is not pitching well by any definition.

    As for my previous question, I think Byrd’s HGH “scandal” may be the reason why teams aren’t showing an interest in him. All the same, I’m surprised at some of the names still out there.
