“Mitre, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is out until at least midseason, was suspended for using a legal supplement that, unknown to him, contained a trace amount of androstenedione, a steroid precursor, ESPN.com reported. Mitre said in a statement Monday night that he purchased the supplement at a GNC store in Florida.
The Inquirer reported that the players union sent its members a letter in November saying that supplements purchased in U.S. retail stores should be safe and within the guidelines of MLB’s testing program. The letter also said that three over-the-counter supplements would trigger positive test results, the Inquirer reported.”

FWIW, I’m pretty sure that the clock on the suspension starts after his rehab is done. So, that will be pretty much by the time his contract is up…and the Yankees would have paid and rehabbed him for nothing.

since last week with the Teix bumping Jeter article that Klapisch wrote, I was wondering when do the Yankees draft a big-name SS early in the draft, like they did with Jeter, or like Colorado did with Tulo?

Given the coin dropped on Sabathia, Burnett and Teix, I don’t think the $$ dropped on Mitre is significant.
Besides doesn’t he forfeit his pay because of the suspension? I remember when Pascual was suspended, the Yanks didn’t pay him anything.
Worse comes to worst, he rehabs on the Yankees dime, and maybe signs elsewhere, like Octavio Dotel. Maybe he comes back for another year.
Regardless, someone (maybe the MLBPA) dropped the ball. If it’s a legal supplement, why did it test positive for an illegal substance? Or is MLB’s testing policy that strict?

BILLSTYLE – I’m not sure there will be a “Jeter” like SS prospect available in the draft by the time the Yankees pick.
Anyone – if you’re watching the presser today, live, and reading this also, what number is Tex going to wear? Many seem to think it will be 25 because 23 and 24 are taken.
Geez, let’s hope it’s not 21…and then that can of worms opens up again…

from what i understand, his clock starts from the beginning of the season, so his DL time counts towards his suspension.
He’s still in like to potentially be ready come the summer.

sorry, was i mistaken? was sergio mitre signed on the basis that the yankees need his healthy contributions to win in 2009?
because i was under the impression that it was a pretty good low risk-decent reward, under the radar signing that most probably wont hurt or help the yankees either way this season.
lets get real here.

he sounded giddy to be a yankee, but then again anyone would sound giddy with $180ish million in their back pocket guaranteed.
but the whole part about his idolizing Don Mattingly as “the guy” even as a kid who went to Orioles games was genuine and cool to hear from him.

Mitre’s contract is for $1.25 million and there is a team option for 2010. Due to the severe surgery on his right elbow, Mitre may not be ready to pitch until midseason. So, now, add 8 weeks on to that because of the suspension. That means he be available to pitch probably some time around September 2009.
Is he really going to help the team, then, “getting real”? No.
It probably made more sense using that $1.25 million and adding it to the low-ball $10 million dollar offer made to Pettitte.
Yeah, there’s the option for 2010. But, considering that the guy wasn’t that good to begin with, what makes you think he’ll have any value in 2010 after being out for most of 2009, now, thanks to the suspension?
It was a waste of a signing. The Yankees should have made him pee in a cup before inking him. Maybe that would have saved them a mill?

One has nothing to do with the other.
Mitre’s contract is a split contract; he gets a different salary if he stays in the majors.
IIRC, the Yankees (ballclubs in general) don’t handle steroid/PED testing.
Of course, we haven’t found out why, if Mitre took a legal supplement, that an illegal substance was found in it. Doesn’t make any sense.

They kept saying on the Fan that not only was it a legal substance that Mitre and Romero took, but that it was also specifically approved by MLB. Only later did MLB realize that it contained a banned substance. They still decided to give them 50 game bans.
Of course, most of that I heard from Mike Francesca.

unless they think Pettitte is already overpaid at $10 million, which apparently they do.
and i’m still under the impression that Mitre’s suspension can be served technically while he’s rehabbing, so he’d still be in line to pitch midseason 2009 if he’s back and healthy.
so they took a $1 million gamble on a veteran pitcher coming back on an injury. thats a big deal? thats never been done before by any other ‘reputable’ GM?
