Both contracts were too long and too expensive. I don’t like either of them.
I’m not an AJ Burnett fan at all given his injury history but Derek Lowe coming back to the AL East (and in front of a bad defense) would’ve been lousy. He’s 37 years old and he was rancid in his last two years in the AL in 2003 and 2004. I’m glad the Yanks didn’t sign Lowe.
What I don’t understand is how the hell the Mets let him get away. Now Ollie Perez has ALL the leverage in the world with them.
the issue with burnett is that he gets injured (though far less than what is perceived). the issues with lowe are that coming back to the al east, he probably isn’t going to be that good, and he’s not old, he’s borderline really old. weighing these concerns i’m taking burnett.
Every pitcher is an injury risk. Just because Lowe has always been healthy doesn’t mean at 37 he’ll be a rock for 4 yrs.
If you are going to pay each top dollar don’t you want the more dominating, younger pitcher who has been really successful in the hardest division in baseball?
