Feel free to use this post as a place for you to comment on anything Yankees-related (or within reach of tagging the bag of being Yankees-related on a decent slide) today. It could be a casual conversation offering, or, something you saw in the news, or something very detailed that you want to share that’s within the territory of Yankeeland.
Or, comment on something that someone else has posted here in the comments…
Have fun. Play nice. And, remember, keep it Yankees-focused.

So if we dont resign Andy, what are the best 5th starter options out there? (other than from within of course) I’m thinking we still need to sign a legitimate innings eater and one thats proven. If thats possible, lol.
There are a number of options, but I think we can safely say none of them are better than Pettitte. His 200 innings would be quite an advantage because you know somebody is going to get hurt at some point.
Well said YankCrank
FWIW, if the Yanks CAN NOT get Pettitte to agree to a one-year deal, since the question was asked, in terms of a next best step, I would like to see them sign Jon Garland to a one-year deal, say, for about $7 million with incentives that could push it to $10 million…if he makes 30 starts and throws 190 innings, for example…with a team option for a second year….at $10 million for 2010 or a buy-out at $2 million.
Right now, if you’re Garland, all things considered, I think you would noodle hard over that deal. And, for the Yankees, well, he’s not a great pitcher…but Garland out of the 5th slot would save your bullpen, for sure, much more than a rookie, near rookie, or questionable vet would, IMHO.

I could see that and probably live with it, although I think Jon Garland more or less stinks. But he’s certainly a durable arm for the 5th slot in the rotation and IS capable of getting MLB hitters out on occasion. It beats Ponson again, that’s for sure.
However, now that the Braves have signed Lowe and the Mets have to fill two holes in their rotation, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them go for Jon Garland with at least a two-year deal. I’d rather not get into a bidding war of sorts for Jon Garland. I wouldn’t want him here for more than one year.
Cliff Corcoran over at Bronx Banter has what looks like a pretty complete list of options to me, and the top tier consists of Garland, Braden Looper and Randy Wolf. And if the Yankees don’t want to go for them, there’s always the likes of Josh Fogg or Livan Hernandez. Thrilling stuff.
If the Yankees can sign Pettitte, they should sign Pettitte. Garland’s pretty clearly the next best option, and I would be all right with a two or three year contract because they could almost certainly trade him. But it seems like the Yankees are either going to sign Pettitte or fill from within, which I’m fine with.
Also, Garland’s bb-ref page is available for a mere $55. Who wouldn’t want to jump on that? Besides me, I mean.

I agree, the Yanks should sign Pettitte if they still can. I wouldn’t yield to his demand for $16M but I’ve said all along that the two sides should meet in the middle for $13M.
I don’t see why the Yanks should ever consider signing Garland to a two or three year deal. Why bother?

Yeah. My brief order of preferences:
1. Sign Pettitte
2. Fill from within
…
5. Sign Garland.
…
132. Forfeit season.
133. Re-sign Sidney Ponson.
you forgot option 131!
131. Resign Rickey Henderson

Are you kidding? That’s option 3. Ain’t no one more entertaining than Rickey.
Plus, there’s a decent chance he could outproduce Melky and Gardner put together.

Hysterical! You’d rather forfeit the season than bring back Sidney Ponson!
