Some recent changes to the Yankees projected 2009 Opening Day roster (based on the players they reportedly have under contract now):

    Jorge Posada
    Juan Miranda Mark Teixeira
    Robinson Cano
    Alex Rodriguez
    Derek Jeter
    Hideki Matsui
    Johnny Damon
    Brett Gardner
    Xavier Nady
    Jose Molina
    Melky Cabrera
Wilson Betemit Ramiro Pena Angel Berroa
    Chris Malec Nick Swisher
    Chien-Ming Wang
    Joba Chamberlain
Darrell Rasner Ian Kennedy CC Sabathia
    Phil Hughes  Andy Pettitte
    Alfredo Aceves A.J. Burnett
    Mariano Rivera
    Brian Bruney
    Jose Veras
    Edwar Ramirez
    Phil Coke
    David Robertson
    Mark Melancon Damaso Marte

Still too many outfielders on this one as it stands…and, looking at it all now, it seems like the bullpen could be a concern this season…as you really just don’t know if Bruney, Veras, Ramirez, Coke and Robertson are going to be trust-worthy given their limited track records at the big league level.

      The pen will be fine.

They won’t be exposed to nearly as many innings now with the stable of horses in that rotation.

Don’t be surprised if Melancon becomes a mainstay by June.

The Yanks are carrying 5 OF’ers (Matsui, Damon, Nady, Gardner, Cabrera) and a 6th (Swisher) that can play 1B as well. I assume that Matsui will no longer be treated as an OF which then leaves 4 regular OF’ers and a 5th who will get some games at 1B as well (not many, but a handful perhaps).

The bullpen doesn’t concern me. Those arms that will do the job will stick around. Those that fail will be replaced by other in-house candidates like Jon Albaladejo, Chris Britton, or the Texera guy that we got in the Swisher deal (or some other unknown quantity that will reveal itself during the year). With Rivera/Marte you’re already working with 2 guys that have been successful in the big leagues and Bruney took strides in that direction last year.

IIRC, Britton is now a Padre.

AAA and AA are totally stocked with viable arms for the BP if someone struggles.
