WasWatching.com Water Cooler Talk 1/30/09 A-Rod’s Sparring Partner Returns To Beantown
Jan 30

Let’s pretend that Johnny Damon has a big 2009 with the bat…say, he hits .315, with 70 walks and 65 extra base hits, scoring 115 runs and driving in another 80.

What do you do with him at the end of the season? Just let him walk away…since he’ll be 36 in 2010? Or, do you try and get him to sign another deal, say, for two years at $9 million each…with a team option for a third year at $11 million (with a $3 million buyout)?

OK, sure, it’s more of a question than a wild thought…but, nonetheless, it’s today’s wild thought.

Personally, I’d definitely try to sign him to a short, front-loaded deal. At best, the Yanks keep a productive player without extending themselves too far and at worst they bridge the gap to the future.

What if Nady and Damon both have a great 2009?

Given his age, I doubt Nady would take a 2 year deal…where Damon might…

Given his career to this point, I just don’t see it. He’s a league average player and has been for his entire career (save a fluky 1st half of 2008).

I like JD but his game is all based on good legs. He could fall off a cliff at anytime. If we get a productive 2009, we should just feel lucky.
