Wild Thought: The Great Race

The Yankees play the Twins four times during Spring Training this year.
How cool would it be if the Yankees’ Brett Gardner and the Twins’ Carlos Gomez had a race before one of those Spring Training games? Who do you think would win?

I’ve always hoped that baseball would do a “skills challenge” kind of thing at the All-Star game, as a complement to the HR Derby. I’d love to see a race between Gardner, Gomez, Ellsbury and the other speedsters and I’d love to see a radar gun clocking throws from strong-armed shortstops or seeing Ichiro throwing a ball from RF to 3B on a straight line.

I’d also love to see that, as long as none of the players participating are Yankees. The idea is cool, but with $20+ million invested into some of our players, the last thing I want an A-Rod/Jeter/Tex participating in is a skills challenge

We let ‘em play in the ASG, where the risk of injury is just as great (think back to Clint Hurdle making Brad Lidge warm up 4-5 different times last year). But I see your point.
i think it depends on the distance steve. shorter the better for gardner. lighting out of the box with quick feet. to first base i like gardner. longer the better for gomez. much longer strides, effortess once he gets going. 100 yards or more i like gomez.
what do you think?

Dunno. They say that Gomez can leave Jose Reyes in the dust. He’s that fast. But, they also say that Gardner can beat out any grounder to the right of second. It would be a fun race to watch, for sure.
