If you haven’t read Bryan Hoch’s “An evening with Brian Cashman” yet, you should…it’s a good read.

You know what scared me in this piece? That Cashman compared Brett Gardner to Juan Pierre (.346 career OBP/84 career OPS+). Juan Pierre stinks, just as I’m afraid Brett Gardner will.
“What if: Yes, the four-year, $40 million deal to Carl Pavano was a bust. But Cashman said Pavano turned down even more money from the Tigers, Mariners and Orioles. The Red Sox were also hot on Pavano.”
Regardless, it was a stupid signing.

He did say that he’s like Pierre, but Gardner’s willing to take a walk. Whether that’s true or not is another story entirely.

Fair enough, maybe Gardner walks more than Pierre. But he may not even hit as much (little) as Pierre did. In that case, his walks become his ONLY offensive value and the rest of the time he’s making outs with no pop. Yuck.
