I voted no. The pitching, maybe. The defense, possibly. Injuries, definitely. Rodriguez’s shenanigans? Nah.
I voted no as well. The Yankees know the drill by now.
The whole “distractions” thing is so silly. How do doctors — with life and death on the line — handle their patients or surgeries when they have problems at home or elsewhere? How do lawyers defend their clients when they’ve got other things on their minds? Can traders on Wall Street maximize profits when life is a bit hectic on the home front?
Why can’t ballplayers? Of course they can. The Yanks aren’t more likely to win if reporters ask less intrusive questions about A-Rod. The Yanks aren’t losing because there are always about three dozen nosy people in the locker-room after a game.
Put another way: the whole “distraction” thing was cooked up by the media to (a) have a nebulous but easy story to discuss when things seem off-kilter on a team and (b) satisfy a self-important image of themselves that somehow they could really matter that much so as to throw an otherwise championship-caliber team into disarray.
Tampa (IPS). Yankee players arriving in camp this Spring have been advised by their club that the Media will be asking each of them the following three (3) questions:
1.) What are your feelings about the A-Rod/steroids situation?
2.) Can we quote you on that?
3.) What was your name again?
